Back in 1991 when I first started to assemble our portfolio of clay roof tiles, as an Ex Brit, I had to include the traditional small size English shingle tiles. Over the intervening years I am pleased to say Northern has grown a reputation in the industry as being the ‘go to guys’ for English style roofs. We understand how to replicate the detailed features made famous by the great English Country House Architects such as Edwin Lutyens, CFA Voysey and MH Baillie Scott.
Being old fashioned traditionalists Northern still offer authentic English style shingle tiles with all the traditional fittings and accessories.
Making English style tiles the traditional way is not exactly high tech and they are all the better for it. The unevenness and irregularities of size and shape all add up to the inconsistency which is called in Old English ‘higgledy piggledy’. When the sun moves across the roof each day it casts ever changing shadows making the roof scape seemingly come alive.
In a world of ever increasing automation and conformity, isn’t it refreshing to know that you can have a roof in which every tile and fitting has been individually made and installed by craftsmen! This is one tradition we are proud to keep alive.
